Health & Safety Policy — Skip Hire Yiewsley
Skip Hire Yiewsley is committed to providing a safe, healthy and compliant working environment for all employees, contractors and members of the public affected by our rubbish collection and skip hire services. This policy sets out the objectives, responsibilities and practical controls that govern our waste management operations and skip hire services across the service area. Safety is an integral part of our operational planning and commercial delivery for all skip hire and rubbish removal activities.
Our management team accepts overall responsibility for health and safety and will ensure that adequate resources are assigned to eliminate or control hazards associated with waste collection, transportation and disposal. Line managers, supervisors and skip hire operatives must implement this policy and ensure that site risk assessments are carried out and reviewed. Everyone engaged in our rubbish company activities has a duty to work safely and report concerns.
Scope: This policy applies to all employees, agency staff, contractors and subcontractors involved in skip hire operations, rubbish clearance, waste collection, recycling activities and customer site visits. It covers the operation of roll-on/roll-off, static and builder’s skip services, vehicle movements, loading/unloading, manual handling and the handling of potentially hazardous materials. Skip hire provision and rubbish removal are operated in accordance with current statutory requirements and industry best practice.
Risk Management and Controls
All work activities will be subject to documented risk assessments and method statements. Control measures will be applied following the hierarchy of controls: elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls and personal protective equipment. Our skip hire operatives receive instruction on safe loading limits, correct placement of skips, and traffic management when delivering or collecting skips on site or on public highways.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided and must be used wherever required. PPE requirements include hi-vis clothing, gloves, steel-toe boots, eye protection and hearing protection where applicable. Training and competency records are maintained to ensure the rubbish removal team and skip hire drivers are qualified for their roles.
Vehicle safety and driver standards are critical. All company vehicles used for waste collection and skip delivery are inspected, maintained and subject to daily checks. Drivers must follow safe loading procedures, secure loads correctly and adhere to speed limits and traffic regulations while operating within the service area. Fatigue management and driver welfare are actively managed.
Handling Waste and Hazardous Materials
Waste segregation and correct identification of hazardous or controlled wastes is mandatory. Our rubbish collection protocols require separation of recyclable materials, inert waste and hazardous wastes which must be declared and handled by trained staff. Where hazardous substances are encountered, operations will stop, and qualified personnel will assess and control the risk in line with chemical safety guidance.
Manual handling risks are minimised through the use of mechanical aids, skip lifters and safe systems of work. Staff are trained in safe lifting techniques and are instructed to seek assistance for heavy or awkward items. Our rubbish company policy enforces a maximum safe load practice for all skip types and forbids overloading that may compromise lifting gear or vehicle stability.
Communication of hazards is maintained by clear site signage, toolbox talks and briefings before works commence. Customers and contractors are advised of restrictions on prohibited items to ensure compliance with waste transfer requirements and environmental responsibilities.
Emergency Procedures, Reporting and Review
Emergency preparedness includes spill response, containment of hazardous releases, fire procedures and first aid provision. Emergency contact procedures are displayed in depots and vehicles, and nominated first aiders and fire marshals are appointed. Regular drills and scenario rehearsals will be conducted to maintain response readiness.
All incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions must be reported immediately and recorded. An investigation process will determine root causes and corrective actions to prevent recurrence. This rubbish removal incident reporting supports continuous improvement and statutory reporting obligations where required. Lessons learned are shared across the team and incorporated into training.
Monitoring, audit and review processes will ensure the policy remains effective. Health and safety performance is tracked through inspections, internal audits and key performance indicators relevant to skip hire operations and waste management activities. The policy will be reviewed at least annually and whenever there are significant changes to operations, equipment or legislation.
To support this policy we will:
- Provide clear roles and responsibilities for managers and operatives.
- Deliver ongoing training and competence checks for skip hire and rubbish collection staff.
- Maintain vehicles and equipment to a safe standard.
- Ensure hazardous wastes are handled by competent personnel and disposed of lawfully.
Implementation of this Health & Safety Policy is mandatory. Compliance is enforced through supervision, performance monitoring and, where necessary, disciplinary action. We are committed to a culture where safety is treated with the same priority as service quality in all skip hire and rubbish removal activities.
Signed on behalf of the management team: the policy is endorsed and will be communicated to all personnel involved in waste collection and skip hire services. Regular reviews, stakeholder consultation and continual improvement are core to our approach to protecting people and the environment while delivering reliable rubbish company services.
